"It's a Puzzle"
Today in the UEN NOC standup meeting James Hodges of the UEN TOC had an interesting insight into what we do here at UEN. I had asked a question that related to a circuit that was having high utilization in the area I serve as an advocate. Turns out that the reason I had a question was that the circuit was labeled based on an old configuration so I thought it was still configured in the old way. What James said really made sense to me. He said "It is a puzzle, that is why it is interesting to work here". Just that short statement got me "thinking".

Yes, what we do here at UEN IS a puzzle. If it were not, most of us would not be employed here. The State employs us here and pays us a salary to figure out the ?puzzle?. On a related note there has been a lot of dialogue going on within the group and esp. with the management core about making everything "perfect" I.E. streamlining all of our processes so that things don?t go wrong. I think there is a great amount of merit in this activity, but I hope we also recognize that it is "A Puzzle" and many more pieces of the puzzle every day add to the over all solution.

Nothing is static when dealing with technology. With the changes and new technology we are bringing to the network in the next few years, the entire infrastructure and procedures within UEN Technical Services will change.

I am really looking forward to being involved with solving this new puzzle.

Cell Phones
I enjoyed Jim Stewart's entry on Saturday about Cell Phone use. I have been under the weather the past several days and have not had a chance to blog as much as I wanted to. This issue (amongst other commute/travel issues) have been on my mind lately and Jim beat me to the punch. On the same day that I read Jim's blog, this article came across my news feeds. I think it is important to note that even though you may be using a headset with your phone, that does not necessarily make it "safe". The study cited in the article was from researchers here at the UofU and is interesting reading. I have experienced that when I talk on my phone in the car (always using a head/ear set) I tend to drive slower (which with me is a good thing) and I find myself way up the road not knowing how I got there, esp. if the conversation is spirited.
